[LISTEN] Why impeaching the president is 'difficult'
While the African National Congress (ANC) NEC remains divided on President Jacob Zuma and a motion of no confidence is proving to be a difficult process, former ANC MP Melanie Verwoerd says impeaching him would be an even harder task.
She explains what some of the grounds for impeachment are.
To impeach the president is a much more difficult process, because impeachment is regarded as even more serious and if he is impeached he loses all the benefits that he would otherwise have gotten....Melanie Verwoerd, political analyst and former MP
To get an impeachment through there are certain grounds to it, for example a serious violation of the constitution or the law, serious misconduct or an inability to perform the functions of office.Melanie Verwoerd, political analyst and former MP
The constitution says if you can convince the house that one or more of those three exist, the big thing is two-thirds of parliament have to vote for it and this is why the opposition has never tried it because there is just not enough numbers to do that, to get two-thirds you need 267 MPs to vote for it and the opposition has 151.Melanie Verwoed, political analyst and former MP
