Dads by Design: Why fathers are becoming more involved with their children

In celebration of Father’s Day on Sunday, 702's Phemelo Motene spoke to Creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush, about how dads are far more involved with their children than ever before, and why that’s such a good thing.

The national institute of child health and human development in the states is saying that father's are far more involved in children's lives than ever before and you just have to walk around shopping centres and attend school events in South Africa to see how many more dads are in the audiences.

I think we are seeing a lot more flexibility in roles, the softening of male and female roles and that;s got to do with economics, urbanisation, the fact that 60% of women are now in the working force and that has created more space.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

The function of a dad has become less defined and less structured in our minds, and I say this is a movement called 'dads by design'. So dads are able to design their own role in their children's lives and I think there is a lot more consciousness amongst men of the fact that their children need the input of their dad.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

Bush also explains how dads are often an integral part of helping children learn how to master these items which are fantastic for children’s gross motor development.

So often when you are going through a park or suburb, who is the person pushing kids on bikes?... It is often the male influence. We mustn't underestimate the value of gross motor activities, like things on wheels, things that move.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

Children need to develop their core strength, their balance, bilateral integration where they learn how to move the left and right hand side of their body in a coordinated way and they do that when they ride bikes and scooter.... It develops the body, so you can go and find those two wheeler scooters.
