Apparently, behind every successful employee is a conscientious partner

The study titled The Long Reach of One's Spouse reveals that having a conscientious partner is associated with greater job satisfaction, higher earnings and increased likelihood of promotion, for both men and women.

We spoke to Dr. James Connolly, who the co-authored the study. Connolly says the logic is that if you have a well organised supportive life at home, it makes it easier to give all that you have at work.

The personality of the spouse is as about as important as one’s own personality in terms of predicting success and satisfaction at work .

Dr. James Connolly

The importance of a conscientious partner

Connolly says that a conscientious partner is one who is reliable, persistent, good in their work habits and predictable in certain aspects of their routine and behavior.

Those people tend to allow their spouses or bestow on their partners an extra level of achievement.

3 benefits of a conscientious partner, according to the study:

  • Over a 5 year period, those with conscientious partners make more than their peers.
  • Greater work performance and satisfaction.
  • Increased likelihood of being promoted at work.
