"Nothing stops the Public Protector investigating any conduct in state affairs"

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane spoke to Eusebius McKaiser about pressing issues such as the state capture report.

Advocate Mkhwebane has had a long standing career in the public sector before assuming the role of Public Protector.

The office of the Public Protector was set up in terms of Chapter 9 of South Africa’s Constitution to investigate complaints against state agencies or officials. It is one of six Chapter 9 institutions, identified in the Constitution as “state institutions supporting constitutional democracy”.

In her own words, Mkhwebane says the role of the office of the Public Protector is to strengthen constitutional democracy.

The Public Protector is there to investigate maladministration in state affairs to make that we don't have corruption which is detrimental to South Africans.

During a media briefing on Monday, Mkhwebane stated her intentions to oppose President Jacob Zuma’s bid to have the state capture report reviewed.

We’ll be opposing the judicial review application, we’re still finalising the process of collating all the evidence which the President required.
