An estimated R124 million is need to repair WC schools post #CapeStorm

The Western Cape Education Department announced that 170 schools were damaged by the Cape Storm that hit on 7 June. The announcement made on Monday shows that the estimated cost of repairs and replacements comes in at around R124 million.

Western Cape Education MEC, Debbie Schafer says 102 schools were left with damaged roofs, 27 schools had damaged fences and structural damage experienced at 14 schools. She says 55 schools were immediately repaired for teaching to resume soon after the disastrous storms.

Schafer says the department currently sits with a budget crisis, making it a challenge to replace and repair the rest of the damaged schools.

Schools don't all insure, particularly the poorer ones.

Schafer adds that following the storms, they are now considering the option of insuring schools as opposed to leaving the responsibility solely to schools.

Schafer explains that they may have to approach national government for emergency funding.
