#SocialMediaBlackOut "The idea is good but may be ineffective"

The 'Social Media Blackout' campaign has been trending for most of Wednesday, despite calls for mobile users to boycott social media in an attempt to get South African network providers to reduce exorbitant data prices.

Social Media Strategist, Jodene Shaer says while it looks good on paper it is almost impossible for users to switch off social media.

It has become such an integral part of our lives, for some of us it is part of our work so we can't just take a day off, for others, it is a way to get around and stay connected. The idea of it is really good but unfortunately, if it doesn't impact the bottom line, I don't know what kind of impact it is going to make.

She agrees data costs are high and something needs to be done about it.

But you would hope that there was another level that was taken so that it was also a day where the right people got into communication with the network providers to understand why the data is so high and what they are doing about it.
