Capetonians invited in to submit names for a flight of steps in Kalk Bay

The City of Cape Town and has invited the public for comment on the naming of a flight of concrete steps in Kalk Bay. The suggestion to name them the ‘Manila Steps’ was brought forward by Tony Trimmel, Kalk Bay Historical Society.

Trimmel proposed that the steps be named in honour of a Filipino fishermen who settled in Kalk Bay in the mid-1800s.

Trimmel explains that there have been some myths and inaccurate information about the Philippine settlers. He adds that the naming suggestion lies with the naming committee.

The final decision will lie with the mayor and the public has until the end of July to comment.

He says they are optimistic that his suggestion will be selected.
