[LISTEN] How not to be a horrible boss

Babita Mathur-Helm is the Senior Lecturer in Organisational Transformation and Development at University of Stellenbosch Business School.

She spoke to Azania Mosaka about the fundamental difference between a leader and a manager.

A leader is always concerned about people and they always care about their people. They are looking for growth development of their employees and helping them reach their goals and full potential, whereas a boss or normal manager is more concerned about their own power, authority, and control mechanisms.

She says managers should also be aware of their own growth needs.

There are managers who do not complete the journey of personal growth and development and gathering their own insights.

She adds that they do not challenge themselves to get out of their comfort zone.

So they get stuck there and that is how they also behave with their employees. It is a definitely a journey.... it is very important for a leader to develop in that way.
