Reports of H5N8 bird flu in South Africa

Two individual cases of bird flu have been reported in Mpumalanga and the Free State.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on Thursday reported an outbreak on a commercial broiler breeder farm in Mpumalanga, citing a report from the South African farm ministry.

An outbreak of a highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu at a farm in the Free State province was also confirmed by the agricultural industry body group, AgriSA, on Friday.

The South African Poultry Association's CEO Kevin Lovell says a plan is in process.

The nature of this disease, the protocols are to limit the chances that it will get into a commercial farm and then to manage the consequences. You can't stop it coming into South Africa. One of the things we will be doing in this particular case is understanding, did it come from the water or did it come from somewhere else? That will take a couple of weeks.

Kevin Lovell, CEO South African Poultry Association

This farm has a number of sites on it and one house on one of the sites was affected There is quarantine over the whole farm and a heightened surveillance of that farm.

Kevin Lovell, CEO South African Poultry Association

If any of you see dead wild birds on your travels or dead backyard chickens please report it to the department of agriculture.
