ANC's Mkhize: political party funding should come from public purse

ANC Treasurer General Dr Zweli Mkhize says political party funding needs to be regulated to avoid the undue influence of donors in political processes.

Parliament has agreed to the formation of a multi-party ad hoc committee to look into the funding of political parties.

The inquiry will investigate whether public funding of political parties is adequate and will also consider the need to regulate private funding, including its disclosure.

The 11 member committee will have six MPs from the ANC, two from the DA, one from the EFF and two representing the other parties.

It must report back to the National Assembly by 30 November 2017.

Mkhize proposes that political party funding should come from government in order to curb external influences and to address party proportional representation.

It should not so much be about parties raising their own funds, there must be a strong say of the public on how funds are received.

The funding should be coming from the public purse, then you know that anyone out there is not going to manipulate a party.

It must be about balance... There must be degree of regulation and some degree of transparency and the public purse must carry a more significant load.

He shared the main sources of ANC funding and admitted that the Gupta family made a R 5 million contribution, two years ago.

He says that ANC funders are properly documented in order to ensure that everything is above board.

Mkhize maintains that donors do not have any influence on political processes and says they have the right to confidentiality.

At the same time, Mkhize says he would accept on a nomination for ANC presidency if asked to lead the party in the coming elective conference.
