ANC policy conference can be seen as proxy for Dec elective conference - analyst

The ANC's policy conference expected to start this weekend can be seen as a proxy for the party's December elective conference, says political analyst Lukhona Mnguni.

Mnguni says factions within the ANC appear to be in agreement in terms of policy positions.

Meanwhile, political analyst Sthembile Mbete says the ruling party has created a disjuncture between its rhetoric and its official written policy discussion documents.

The party is pulling in different directions. There is no coordinated policy-making.

Mnguni and Mbete reflected on the succession battle, factions and the stance of provincial parties ahead of the upcoming policy conference.

Mbete says Gauteng ANC appears to be more aware about the criticism facing the party and the need to improve its reputation.

KZN remains very important for the ANC at a broad scale.

Lukhona Mnguni, political analyst

Mnguni believes that the ANC can win 2019 elections through arranged leadership, but the leadership may collapse shortly after due to factions.

The pair discussed state capture allegations, the integrity of the ANC from branch level, radical economic transformation rhetoric and other policy proposals.
