Major ransomware cyber-attack "Petya" affects local and international companies

Big companies around the world reported a big hit by a major ransomware cyber-attack called "Petya".

Head of International Sales at Gold Gold N’ Links Cyber, Roi Shaposhnik, says the recent attack is like a big brother to WannaCry, which also affected some companies in May.

He says it uses the same weaknesses that the National Security Agency (NSA) managed to reveal at the time about WannaCry.

This time the hackers sent ransom attacks asking victims to pay them in Bitcoins.

The second you switch on your computer all your files have been ransomed and everything encrypted and you are shut down.

It affected a lot of companies... it is spreading combining network attack and client site attack.

Shaposhnik says the hackers are using a phishing attempt which informs the user to update their software and by so doing people are getting the ransom into their system.

Daniel from Noordhoek shared his experience with CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies of how the company he is working for fell victim to malware and was asked to pay a ransom in bitcoins.

They refused to pay because there was no guarantee they will get everything back. They decided to clear out everything which then required them to start all over again. He says it took them three weeks to finally be up and running again.
