Amnesty international condemns arrest of Zimbabwean activist Mwarire

Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of leader of the #ThisFlag protest movement, Evan Mawarire.

The pastor and anti-government activist was detained on Monday while praying with medical students at the University of Zimbabwe. The group were protesting over a recent fees hike.

In a statement, Amnesty International’s deputy regional director for Southern Africa‚ Belinda Moses said the arrest is a "classic case of history repeating itself."

"His arrest unfortunately shows that he continues to be targeted by a government hell-bent on criminalising him for exercising his rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly‚"

Mawarire's case is set to be heard on Wednesday.

They sent out a very strong statement to say that here is someone who is being targeted by authorities for exercising his rights... the pastor says he was simply praying with the students.
