"Relationship between prisoners and warders oscillates from good to bad"

Azania Mosaka spoke to Professor Lukas Muntingh of Africa Criminal Justice Reform at UWC's Dullah Omar Institute, about some of the complexities involved in overseeing prisons and inmates.

He also talks about relations between warders and convicts.

The Department of Correctional Services oversees nearly 243 correctional centers with 40 000 employees, as well as 135 000 inmates.

It's a large organisation and its a complex range of functions that the department needs to fulfill in order to comply with the legislation and the Constitution.

It's safe to say that the relationship between prisoners and warders oscillates from poor to good overtime and certain prisons appear to be more problematic than other prisons. I am not saying the other prisons are without problems but we must be aware that not all are the same.

Professor Lukas Muntingh, Dullah Omar Institute

We see reports in the media from time to time but there have also been court cases which centre around two main issues, that is governance which relates to oversight and other hand human rights relations.
