Motsoaledi responds to intern doctors claims of no jobs

Unemployed intern doctors say that the Department of Health is taking forever to place them and putting pressure on other doctors who clearly need a helping hand.

These are qualified doctors who have been waiting several months to be placed in jobs by the government.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says his office has been trying to resolve these issues but the doctors keep declining work.

He says he has a list of 35 newly qualified doctors which was given to him a week ago.

According to Motsoaledi, 11 doctors declined work because they were placed in provinces or in hospitals where they don't want to work in.

He explains that doctors are given an opportunity to choose five places where they would like to work. Looking at the list of options, the department places doctors depending on availability of spaces.

8 doctors said they were not interested in the hospitals which they were placed in, which were their third choices, he says.

6 doctors on the list are still busy with their exams and not yet qualified.

7 wrote exams only on Monday but are already on the list of unemployed doctors.

Three doctors were successfully placed.

Motsoaledi says most doctors who have declined placements are from the Western Cape and those are also the first to complain about unemployment.

He promises that doctors who are on the list will be placed soon as mid-year placements are due to commence.

Anybody who is a South African and is due to be placed, by July there will be a hospital where they are supposed to go and work.

Some are going to give us reasons saying that I am married I cannot take that post. People want to choose where they want to be placed and come blame us thereafter.
