Motsoaledi says new NHI will bring about radical change

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi held a media briefing on Thursday morning to explain the new white paper on the National Health Insurance scheme (NHI).

The scheme was first proposed back in 2010 and includes plans to allow anyone access to any hospital under the scheme as well as to have their medical care paid for by government.

But very few details have emerged so far about how this is going to be paid for and what will happen to private hospitals and medical aids.

EWN reporter, Barry Bateman attended the briefing.

Bateman says the minister had no significantly new details to share.

Bateman adds that Motsoaledi wasn't clear about how the new scheme will be funded.

He also says the minister spoke about a radical change in the medical aid sector, and that quality healthcare will be received by both the poor and those who can afford proper medical care.
