DA Mayor Michael Hollenstein lost votes in a motion of no confidence which saw Speaker Patrick Naga Lipudi elected as mayor of Mogale City Local Municipality on Wednesday.
Lipudi received 39 votes and the DA's Holenstein 38.
Leader of the DA in Gauteng, John Moody described what transpired in the council as "politics of the cheque book".
The reason I say so is that the Speaker was the candidate for the mayoral position and should have recused himself and allowed an independent candidate to be the presiding officer. He insisted upon it that he be the presiding officer as well.— John Moody, Leader of the DA in Gauteng
The other thing is he insisted that they use his official stamp to mark the preferred candidate on the ballot. We argued that why use an official stamp when an ordinary pen can do the same job— John Moody, Leader of the DA in Gauteng
Moody also complained about the rules that were used in council which gives the speaker too much control. He confirmed that one of their members actually voted with the ANC which made them loose votes.
Moody claims that a member of their voting bloc was paid off to vote with the ANC which is why he claims it was "politics of the cheque book".
He says the matter is currently with their legal advisors and the party will soon decide on the way forward.
This is how politics work - you have to rely on good faith. It is not the first time and I doubt it will be the last time that you find there are people within our midst with ulterior motives and do not there fore subscribe to the position you take on a particular matter.— John Moody, Leader of the DA in Gauteng
