Ban of live chicken sales partially lifted

Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana, on Thursday, announced the measures being taken by government to contain the outbreak of avian flu which has already resulted in a ban on the sale of live chickens.

Zokwana tells 702's Midday Report host, Stephen Grootes that the two farms in Mpumalanga where the avian flu was detected have been quarantined. He also adds that the chicks on the farm have been culled to eliminate the risks of the flu spreading.

Beyond that, we have agreed with all stakeholders to allow the sale of live chickens in a controlled manner. We only sell in areas where the influenza hasn't reached.

Senzeni Zokwana, Agriculture Minister

Zokwana explains that they will be keeping records of chickens sold to monitor where and who the chickens are sold to.

We have no record of the influenza causing harm to individuals.
