Why stalwarts won't be participating in ANC policy conference

Stalwarts of the African National Congress say they will not participate in a consultative process scheduled for the first leg of the party's policy conference this weekend.

The group says they have not been invited and that their requests were not met.

ANC veteran, Khulu Mbatha spoke to Stephen Grootes.

We are not boycotting, the truth is we have not been invited to the conference. We had proposed a national consultative conference, and for that, we had asked that there be a joint management committee that will coordinate how we will prepare for this national consultative conference, and then we would work out a common programme...

Khulu Mbatha, ANC veteran

There was no joint committee, we have not received an official invitation. It means those individuals who are stalwarts and veterans belonging to branches are free to go but we as the organised stalwarts and veterans of the ANC will not participate.

He says the organisation will host its own conference in September.

How do you discuss policy when you have a crisis? A crisis of leadership, direction and moral and ethical crisis.
