Eusebius: "Right wing paramilitary thugs in the service of your paymasters"

As media colleagues mourn the death of journalist Suna Venter, Eusebius Mckaiser says intimidation of media should not be ignored.

On Thursday journalist and editor Peter Bruce was threatened by a group of Black First Land First (BLF) protesters outside his home. The group were apparently picketing against white monopoly capital.

Bruce penned a comment this week in which he blamed the controversial Gupa family for being responsible for surveillance of his movements last year.

On Friday, Mngxitama had a heated conversation with Cape Talk's Kieno Kammies, saying although they respect media freedom, the movement will not tolerate what he believes is "unethical and biased white monopoly capital racist reporting".

Last year Venter also faced victimisation, intimidation and death threats following her appearance before the SABC parliamentary ad hoc committee.

While the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) has condemned the picket outside of Bruce's home, 702/CapeTalk's Eusebius McKaiser had a few words of his own.

Suna Venter officially died because of a heart condition but the fuller truth is that she died because of the context in which she was doing her journalism, in a country that prides itself on exporting values like free speech...

Eusebius McKaiser, 702/CapeTalk anchor

If that is the case, why is it that for doing her work she had to experience on numerous occasions, the brake cables of her car were cut, house being broken into, tires slashed, being shot at and abducted. Is that the kind of description that you would associate with journalism in a country that prides itself on being a constitutional democracy? I hope not.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702/CapeTalk anchor

He had this to say about the BLF's actions.

You are not entitled to demand that an editor should write the story that you wish to see on the front pages, not in this country.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702/CapeTalk anchor

Win the argument, what you can't do is behave criminally, so I say to the thugs that went to Peter Bruce's house yesterday. You are not radical leftists, you are simply a bunch of right wing paramilitary thugs in the service of your paymasters, you are not even politically interesting.
