MEC Health W Cape Nomafrench Mbombo talks about the state of healthcare facilities in the rural areas of the Cape.
She says coverage is the biggest challenge - especially when it comes to specialist care.
Patients in rural areas need to be collected as early as 3am and only return home sometimes as late as 10pm.
Where you will be picked up at 3am, you will have walked, because there are no buses, no public transport in those areas. Or you will have probably used your last cent from your grant...in terms of getting a taxi.— Nomafrench Mbombo, MEC Health W Cape
It needs to be a community effort, she says.
They do involve farm owners in assisting workers who need help. She says 'health is everybody's business."
Community halls and churches are offered for pick up points and NGOs bring food for patients while they are waiting.
People live in rural areas deserve the same service as everyone else.
No person should be left behind.— Nomafrench Mbombo, MEC Health W Cape
