Criminals target early morning road runners in Westcliff, Saxonwold and Houghton

Renowned South African road runner‚ Bruce Fordyce‚ was held at gun point by attackers during one of his early morning runs. A car trailed Fordyce, stopped him and proceeded to rob him of his running shoes and watch.

David Katz aka Mr. Active says a warning has been issued to road runners, around the Westcliff, Saxonwold and Houghton areas to be on the lookout for the gang of criminals who are intent on targeting runners.

Katz adds that because people run carrying devices such as phones, music players and fitness watches, it makes it a lot easier for one to become a target. He also cautions against listening to music using headphone while running as that is a form of distraction at a time when you ought to be alert.

Do not run with music, you need to be alert.

These days, if you take a good pair of running shoes, you take a decent heart rate watch and running attire, you're looking at probably ten thousand rand, just on you.

Try join a group if you are going to run in the early morning advises Katz.
