Imizamo Yethu protests bring Hout Bay to a standstill

Protests have flared up at the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement bringing Hout Bay to a complete standstill on Saturday morning.

The City of Cape Town's Xanthea Limberg confirms that residents of the informal settlements are protesting about developments of a formal housing project that is affecting them negatively. Limberg concedes that other issues such as service delivery have also been flagged by the community of Imizamo Yethu in previous months.

Law enforcement's have been placed at the protest to try and calm the already tense protest action says Limberg.

We also intend on having a broader public meeting on Monday to once again indicate to community members where the city is, what actions may implicate them and manage that as best as possible.

Limberg says the city is in the first phase of the re-blocking project. She says the delay has been largely because of the terrain they are working from.

We are trying to manage the living conditions as best as possible.
