South Africans Doing Great Things: Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane

Gender activist, Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane has recently been admitted to do his Masters in Law at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States of America.

He obtained his LLB from Stellenbosch University, graduating in 2013. At Stellenbosch, he was an academic mentor at my on-campus residence and tutored various modules throughout his undergraduate degree.

Mokgoroane also formed part of a group of students who started the First Generation Camp, which is a camp that focuses on ensuring that students who are the first of their families coming to university were equipped with skills to help them succeed at higher learning institutions. After University, Mokgoroane served articles and later become an associate at Bowman Gilfillan Inc.

In July 2016, he served as a law clerk for Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga at the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Mokgoroane was awarded the Sonke Human Rights and Health Fellowship, which will cover his living expenses while pursuing his Masters. He will be doing his Masters in Law in Public Interest Law and Policy with a special focus in Public Health and my second major will be Critical Race Studies.

Mokgoroane lists his areas of interest as identity politics, intersectionality and socio-economic rights, reproductive health and gender equality.

Mokgoroane expresses his plans o returning to South Africa after completing his masters and working at Sonke Gender Justice working to promote gender equality in not only in the country but the continent too.

Mokgoroane is raising his own funds to cover his travelling costs to the United States.
