Zuma's approach will take the ANC to its grave - ANC stalwart

The ANC spent the weekend at their Policy Conference in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg. The first two days of the conference were for assessing the state of the organisation and discussions on the ANC’s organisational renewal document.

EWN reporter Stephen Grootes says: "if there was a chance for the ANC to self-correct this would be the moment".

He says delegates have been debating the infamous phrase "white monopoly capital", with some delegates saying that capitalism doesn't have colour.

This conference is all about the economy but we don't know as yet how that is going to play out.

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies spoke to veteran ANC leader Reverend Frank Chikane following President Jacob Zuma's remarks that the stalwarts are not as strong as they think they are in requesting that a consultative conference to be held.

Chikane says the veterans felt that they could not be part of the NPC because it will make no difference. He says he is disappointed in the President's remarks and if he continues in that manner he will be taking the ANC to its grave.

The opening of the Policy Conference was unfortunate. I don't think the President of the ANC who is supposed to unite the movement would refer to the veterans in the manner in which he did.

Chikane says he is told that the President's remarks have created divisions in the movement, saying people cannot accept his approach.

We have been the stalwarts of this movement and we have made great sacrifice to make sure that South Africa is free.

Rev. Frank Chikane, leader of the ANC stalwarts

We felt that the route the leadership of the ANC is taking is leading to its own demise and risking the future of this country.

Rev. Frank Chikane, leader of the ANC stalwarts

If this is the way they would go into the conference in December you can be sure that he is going to take the ANC to its grave. That behaviour is totally unacceptable...
