Technobyte: Facebook users hits 2 billion mark

Logitech has reinvented the clicker that is used in presentations with the Logitech Spotlight.

Spotlight is an advanced tool that goes well beyond laser pointing and enables you to highlight and magnify on-screen content in an engaging and powerful way so you can better underscore your point.

The advanced pointer system allows you to highlight and magnify points on your slide in pixel-perfect detail, so the audience stays engaged throughout your talk.

Spotlight also has mouse-like cursor control to play videos and open links, and unlike a laser, the cursor and highlights are visible to both a live audience and those on a video conference.

It also pairs with a powerful app so you can set the stage even before your presentation begins. In the app, you can toggle pointer mode, set timed vibration alerts or activate more advanced functions like volume control with hand gestures.

Mini autonomous police cars paired with companion drones and facial-recognition technology will begin patrolling the streets of Dubai by the end of the year to help identify and track suspects.

Named the O-R3, the patrol car can navigate on its own using machine-learning algorithms, but police can control the robot remotely from behind a computer dashboard.

The vehicle also comes equipped with thermal imaging and license-plate readers. The Dubai police force said the robots are intended not to replace human officers but to better manage resources and manpower. By 2030, Dubai plans for robots to make up 25 percent of its police force.

Facebook now has 2 billion monthly users.

Thirteen years after launching, and less than five years after hitting 1 billion, Facebook now has 2 billion monthly active users.

Two billion makes Facebook the largest social app in terms of logged-in users, above YouTube’s 1.5 billion, WeChat’s 889 million, Twitter’s 328 million and Snapchat’s estimated 255 million (extrapolated from its December 2015 ratio when it had 110 million daily and 170 million monthly users).

Beyond YouTube, only Facebook’s other apps have more than 1 billion, including WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, with 1.2 billion each. Instagram might soon join that club as it recently rocketed past 700 million.

Facebook’s growth the last half decade has been fueled by the developing world.
