Gauteng public commuters will soon be introduced to the e-ticket

The Gauteng Provincial Government said it will be introducing a pilot project for a single e-ticket for public transport users, during transport month, in October.

Dr Ismail Vadi, MEC for Roads and Transport at Gauteng Department of Transport explains that the department has been working on the project for some time now. He says the vision is for commuters to use one ticket for all modes of public transport.

Unfortunately, Metrorail at this stage hasn't got any electronic system or e-ticketing system. They are part of the discussions, they know the standards and specifications but they haven't actually rolled out their e-ticketing system.

The South Africa National Taxi Council (Santaco) will also be excluded because they too have internal issues they still need to overcome says Vadi.

Vadi goes on to say that they envisage a transport system that doesn't work in silos.

We've tested the thing, it works, you can roll it out but is there a will on the part of the leadership in the taxi industry?

Dr Ismail Vadi, MEC for Roads and Transport at Gauteng Department of Transport

Vadi says the taxi industry hasn't yet devised conclusive plans and how payment will occur with a cashless payment method which is why they are stalling with implementing the proposed e-ticket system.
