National Consumer Commission to crack down on timeshare industry

The Competition Commission began their first round of public information and evidence gathering session on Monday. The session is to get to the heart of issues plaguing the timeshare vacation club industry. The hearings kicked off in Johannesburg.

Ebrahim Mohamed, Commissioner at The National Consumer Commission (NCC) says the commission has received thousands of complaints in the timeshare industry over the years. He says this has been frustrating because the Consumer Protection Act doesn't cover every problem faced by consumers.

We then attempted to take the matter to court, to the National Consumer Tribunal.

Mohamed says the commission decided to conduct a nationwide inquiry to pull together the different legislation and come up with a framework that will comprehensively cover the timeshare industry. He says they are going to try speak to all the stakeholder and consumers countrywide.
