Dont be caught off guard - all you need to know about tax season 2017

The 2017 tax season kicked off on Saturday 1 July.

Group executive for operational support at Sars, Mark Kingon, says anyone with an annual income of R350 000 needs to file tax returns.

Sars has made a few changes to the tax returns form to deal with issues of fraud, says Kingon.

The changes will affect people with different medical schemes and those making contributions to retirement annuity.

Previously we used to lump it all into one field but now you have to list individual contributions that you make with the scheme name and the policy number. This will enable us to understand and to match what people are contributing to.

We have picked up fraud in the disabled area where people have been claiming that they are disabled when they are not and we have additional checks and balances in that field.
