MD of City Power axed over corruption allegations

The City of Johannesburg spokesperson, Tony Taverna-Turison, says the decision to let the managing director of City Power Sicelo Xulu leave the entity was taken by the board.

This follows the filing of a report by forensic accountants Sizwe Gobodo on allegations of widespread corruption within City Power, says Taverna-Turison.

After the final report was handed to the board and the Mayor Herman Mashaba, action was taken immediately.

He has agreed to go and that is the discussion he had with the board as well as his lawyers.

When asked if Xulu was given a chance to clear his name, Taverna-Turison said that City Power acted immediately on this matter because of ongoing problems and the priority is to appoint a new MD.

He says the allegations presented in the report are damning.

We need to clean up the City and the fight against corruption is the one that the Mayor takes very seriously.

Tony Taverna-Turison, City of Johannesburg spokesperson

To ensure that our entities are working at maximum capacity we have to clean up the mess within the city of Johannesburg.
