Icasa kicks off probe into high data prices in SA

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has taken the first step in launching an inquiry into the country’s high data costs.

Last year, the country’s top mobile operators were grilled in Parliament over high data rates amid calls for the high data costs to fall.

Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo also pledged to reduce the cost of data in her budget speech earlier this year.

Icasa has published a notice of its intention to probe South Africa’s high costs of communicating, reports EWN's Ilze-Marie Le Roux.

Le Roux says the debate surrounding high data has been an ongoing issue.

Icasa's notice calls for the public to share their opinion with the regulator through an online questionnaire.

The deadline for submissions is the first of September.

Once the first phase is concluded, a discussion document will be made public.

Public hearings will be then be held.

Take a listen to the EWN update:
