Face to Face with Success

Meet Desmond Mabuza - The man behind Joburg’s Signature

When Desmond Mabuza’s parents suggested that he pursue a career in Engineering, he had no idea that he’d abandon his trade for hospitality just a few years later.

It was his cousin, Felicia who helped him discover his passion for the finer things in life.

In 2001, they opened their first jazz-inspired restaurant, Back O' The Moon at Gold Reef City Casino.

Instrumental in its inception, Desmond’s engineering background supported his development of this establishment. An engineer by day and a restaurateur by night, when she approached him with a full-time opportunity as a partner, he sold his interests in his engineering practice.

It wasn’t long after that that Desmond decided to venture out on his own. He noticed a gap in the market for restaurants that ticked all the boxes and sought to make the most of it.

There was nothing that offered what I had in mind, a place where you can have good food, great ambiance, good service and have good entertainment all under one roof.

Desmond Mabuza, Founder of Signature Restaurant

Now eight years later, and while it took time - Desmond’s eateries have become Johannesburg’s most popular fine dining restaurants, and he plans to expand his prospects across Africa.

Do things right, all the time. Don’t cut corners, and the universe will make it happen.

Desmond Mabuza, Founder of Signature Restaurant

Listen to Desmond in conversation with Nikiwe Bikitsha in this week’s Face to Face With Success, brought to you by Nashua.
