New IAAF study reignites debate of women athletes with higher testosterone

A discussion has resurfaced over the last few days about the role that testosterone plays in the effectiveness of women athletes.

Dr Ross Tucker, an exercise physiologist and high performance sports consultant, says testosterone is the fundamental difference between men and women.

Its not a coincidence that since the 1960's most doping has involved the use of testosterone.

Tucker says the new study from the The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is going to divide opinion. The study found that in five events, female athletes who have higher testosterone levels performed better than those whose levels were lower.

Women runners born with high testosterone levels enjoy a "significant competitive advantage", says a study published on Monday by the IAAF in what could reignite debate on the future participation of athletes whose gender is under question.

The study, jointly sponsored by the International Association of Athletics Federations seeking to ban athletes with hyperandrogenism, comes three weeks before the IAAF presents expert evidence on "the actual degree" of advantage gained.

The problem is there are 15 events where that difference was not significant.

Tucker explains the new study and evidence may not implicate South African athlete, Caster Semenya in a negative manner.
