Campaign gets able-bodied people to think twice before using disabled parking

A non-governmental organisation, Senecio, started a campaign that will make able-bodied people think twice before using disabled parking at shopping malls. This is a problem experienced in many shopping malls across the Cape.

Fundraising and marketing manager at Senecio, Mieke Rautenbach, says they were approached by Waterstone Village shopping centre in Somerset West to help them deal with this problem.

So they cleverly filled a row of parking bays with wheelchairs and mobility scooters‚ preventing cars from using them.

The wheelchairs had signs on them which read "I’m just quickly drawing money" or "I can park where I want to".

To have a parking is something they really need, they need space to actually pull their wheelchair next to the car, it is not just a luxury thing.

The campaign is about creating awareness that disability parking is not a privilege but actually a right for that person to have.
