The importance of bees in our society can never be overstated. Responsible for the pollination of 70 percent of the world’s top human food crops, which account for 90 percent of our nutrition, the little creatures are crucial to the stability of society.
A social entrepreneur, Portia Morudi is the oOwner and beekeeper at The Village Market. Her love for bees was ignited by her grandfather and began during her childhood.
Morudi says after several occasions of having to contend with bees that settled and produced honey on their home ceiling and causing it to cave in, her grandfather then suggested that the family go for beekeeping lessons, instead of resorting to smoking out the bees, which they considered pests for the longest time.
This was the resounding moment that saw Morudi quit her job to pursue beekeeping.
The motivation was the realisation of how important these insects were. Only much later did I realise that they had potential to also change lives in rural communities.— Portia Morudi is the Owner and Bee Keeper at The Village Market
We have nine communities at the moment and each community has fifty hives.— Portia Morudi is the Owner and Bee Keeper at The Village Market
In 2014, Morudi together with her partner founded The Village Market, a virtual market place for the many farmers around her hometown in Winterveld to turn their subsistence farming into something more commercial.
In addition they also emphasised the benefits of bees, to the farmers to ensure both the safety of these creatures and the prosperity of the land they inhabit.
