ANC MP Makhosi Khoza wrote to Parliamentary Speaker Baleka Mbete arguing in favour of a secret ballot in the motion of no-confidence gainst President Jacob Zuma, saying she has received death threats on a daily basis.
EWN parliamentary correspondent Gaye Davis says Khoza made comments about these threats and her letter while at the ANC National Policy Conference in Nasrec, Johnnaseburg.
She wasn't there for very long because she has injured her ankle and has torn ligaments....but she made these comments on the sidelines, that she had written to the Speaker and she believes MPs need protection and that a secret ballot will do that.— Gaye Davis, EWN parliamentary correspondent
She had spoken out at the ANC NPC after NEC member Fikile Mbalule had made it clear that MPs should tow the party line.
He had essentially told them they would be political suicide bombers.— Gaye Davis, EWN parliamentary correspondent
Davis says Khoza now seems to be in a bit of hot water for speaking to the media following his statements.
The only person she says who has ensured her safety is ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu....but no one else has condemned the intimidation she has been subjected to.— Gaye Davis, EWN parliamentary correspondent
Davis says Kohza is a strong independent minded MP.
