Licensing department robberies deliberate with possible internal links: Msimanga

Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanaga says there is a serious attack and concerted effort to stall service delivery in the city.

This after a spate of robberies at the Watloo, Akasia and Centurion license departments between June and July.

Several live capturing unit computer systems used for eye testing and thumb imprints were stolen in one of the incidents, preventing some of these departments from issuing license and driving license renewals.

Msimanga says two suspects involved in the Akasia break-in have been arrested.

We were able to apprehend two culprits involved in the syndicates and we are following up on a few leads that could result in who may have been involved internally.

We are having a serious attack on the city's ability to provide services, but we are suspecting that this is a concerted effort because it is not just an opportunistic criminal elements coming in, this is people who know exactly what they are targeting.

Msimanga also responded to the South African Municipal Workers Union's concerns over the possible retrenchment of more than 3 000 guards after the city announced last week that its three-year contract with private security companies won’t be renewed.

Samwu says they were never consulted and that due process must be followed.

Msimanga says however the companies affected were informed accordingly and that they have extended the contracts to three months.

We have a watchman service contract which ended in March and we informed the service providers accordingly. We then decided to give them a three month extension so they can get their affairs in order and see what they need to do with their personnel from there.

Solly Msimanga, Tshwane mayor

What is happening right now is actually sponsored because some of the companies are now trying to force the city's hand to extend these contracts, by using their employees.
