Numsa threatens to down tools over wages in engineering sector

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is threatening a strike in the engineering sector over wages.

The union is demanding a 15% increase across the board.

Numsa’s Phakamile Hlubi says they reject the offer a minimum rate of R20 per hour for new entrants to the sector.

She says talks with employers have reached a deadlock.

We have been clear that this national minimum wage that Cosatu and the ANC has been promoting is nothing more than poverty wages. We demand a living wage, and in the case of the engineering sector this proposal has caused major problems.

Phakamile Hlubi, Numsa spokesperson

The minimum rate in engineering is R40 per hour but thanks to this absurd proposal which has been put on the table and endorsed by Cosatu, workers are now facing a downward variation of their benefits and risk losing the rates which they have fought so hard for.

Phakamile Hlubi, Numsa spokesperson

We have to wait until the 15th of July regarding our strike certificate so we will let the public know exactly when the strike will take place, but as of today we are lobbying all our members to prepare themselves.
