Media freedom wins the day

On Friday, the Johannesburg High Court ruled in favour of the SA National Editors Forum (SANEF) following highly publicised threats against a group of editors and journalists.

The court today granted SANEF an interdict against Andile Mngxitama and his Black Land First Movement.

This after they levelled a number of threats against SANEF members, even leading a picket outside the home of journalist, Peter Bruce. The BLF have since said they will continue to protest against "racist journalists

Ever since Mngxitama formed BLF he's been like a dog that's decided to hold on to a particular dog. I sit here and wonder if it is possible to be incredibly clever and amazingly stupid all at the same time.

Africa Melane, CapeTalk host

Executive Director at the Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI), Tusi Fokani, tells CapeTalk's, Africa Melane that Friday's ruling safeguards and upholds the rights of journalists to convey information and practise freedom of expression.

Fokani also says that journalists often find themselves in difficult positions while being entrusted to write and report fairly without fear and bias.

I think the way we deal with conflicting views is certainly not through harassment and intimidation.

Tusi Fokani, Executive Director at the Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI)

BLF could have opted to write counter stories and convey different perspectives says Fokani.
