Ocean View community fear for its safety

One Thursday evening the people of Ocean View bravely left their homes after dark something which has become taboo in the area.

And they met to talk about making their area safer. Ocean View has been plagued by violence, leaving a number of young people dead. And the community have had enough.

They have decided to step up patrols in their area and are preparing to take a stand against crime with a human chain.

Joining CapeTalk's Africa Melane to reveal more about what happened is community organiser Sharon Daniels. Daniels says the meeting was attended by approximately, one hundred and fifty people, including the Community Police Forum (CPF).

There was a lot of anger, fear and distrust conveyed at the meeting.

Daniels explains that part of the grievances were aimed at the South African Police Service (SAPS). She adds that some also spoke about the forced removals faced by members of the Ocean View community.

The community has decided to hold a night vigil on Friday evening at the place where Cameron had died.

Our taxi association has also taken the initiative to rally support behind our cause says Daniels.

She explains that they want to heal the community's wounds and form part of the solution to reducing crime in the area.
