Winter school holiday family fun away from a screen

Creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush together with Weekend Breakfast host, Phemelo Motene chat about how to have fun at home in the winter school holidays away from a screen.

This is the time to pull out all those fun items that have been hiding in cupboards unused for most of the year says Bush.

If we don't consciously make a plan to get involved with our kids, to create a distraction from a screen, they will just sit in front of a screen during the holidays for hours and hours on end.

We do need to put limits on screen time.

Raid the kids' cupboards, find the puzzles that haven't been played with, find the card and family board games says Bush. She goes on to say that these are ideal to play with and allows for quality time between children and their parents, especially during school holidays.

Play is a language of childhood explains Bush. She goes on to say that parents need to display their excitement and support for play time.

Bush also tells Motene about a board game she's recently discovered called 'BBQ Slam'. A relatively new game on the market. BBQ Slam is a great combination of hysterical fun, fast reflexes, an ability to add at speed, recognise numbers and remember where they are on the board, all at the same time.

Bush explains that the board is shaped like the top of a circular BBQ and all the cardboard items of food (36 in total) are placed on top in piles. Each player has a spatula with a suction cup. There are two dot dice. Add the sum of the dice to see which item of food you need to slap with your spatula. Everyone plays at the same time – imagine four players all slapping at number 2 which is a chicken drumstick. This is what makes the game such fun. Who can get to it first and make it stick!
