600 parolees electronic tags may be switched off after tender contract expires

A dispute about a tender at the Department of Correctional Services could see around 600 people who were released on parole having their electronic tags switched off.

Department of Correctional services' Logan Maistry, says President Zuma signed a proclamation which authorised the Special Investigative Unit to investigate allegations of irregularities in the procurement of the electronic monitoring systems.

Following the findings of this investigation in March 2017 the department took a decision to terminate the contract and gave the said contractor three months notice.

The three months notice has since expired and the contract has been canceled.

The service provider took the department to court over the termination of the contract, says Maistry.

We will continue monitoring these parolees as per normal physical monitoring.

Maistry says the National Commissioner has since released a notice that all tagged offender appear before supervision committees to be subjected to a reclassification process and have their parole conditions reviewed.
