Fires and Hawks robberies not random, part of broader political game - ISS

Institute of Security Studies (ISS) chairperson Dr Jakkie Cilliers says we know better than to believe the most recent Hawks robbery and the fires at two Premier's offices on the same day, are just random acts of criminality.

It was reported on Monday that two laptops were taken from the Hawk's offices in Pretoria in a security breach and on June 30, fires broke out at Premier David Makhura's office as well as in an unused garage at Premier Phumulo Masualle's office in Bhisho.

Two fires in Ramaphosa orientated provinces on the same day is too much to believe as random.

Dr Jakkie Cilliers, ISS

The fires in the EC and Gauteng are clearly efforts of intimidation. With this rise in criminalisation, we see a parallel state well established under President Zuma, that's clear. If the intelligence community was involved (Hawks robbery) they have sophisticated means and don't need to break in.

Dr Jakkie Cilliers, ISS

The efficiency of the criminal justice system has been undermined in recent years. If the President and his cronies like the Gupta's can get away with criminality in all the reports we've seen, then anyone can get away with it. The fish rots at the head... that's what we're seeing in South Africa.
