Pretoria Zoo strike under control, says management

Management at the Pretoria Zoo says a strike by members of the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) is under control following the assault of a non-striking worker on Tuesday.

Workers are demanding to be paid overtime for weekends and that an initial agreement between the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and its various trade unions for a seven day work week, be terminated.

Spokesperson Craig Allenby says the zoo has hired interim staff.

Everything is calm, we have engaged with the union leadership around it and we believe we have everything under control today.

About a third of our workers are affiliated to the union, so we still have a considerable number of staff members on the ground. We have had to bring in some casual labor temporary workers just to assist with the cleaning of our grounds, but the animals are being taken care of by our permanent employees.
