Violence leads to shut down of Soweto taxi routes

Violent conflict between The Nancefield-Dube West Taxi Association (Nanduwe) and the Wits Taxi Association has seen the closing down of five taxi ranks and routes in Soweto to ensure public safety.

Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi announced the decision on Tuesday, after yet another confrontation.

According to Eyewitness News, 20 association members have been killed over the past six months, along with incidents of intimidation and assault.

Yesterday we published the gazette to shut down five taxi routes in the Soweto area and the routes along those ranks.

Commuters are being intimidated, tires are being slashed. There is just a kind of lawlessness prevailing along those routes.

Ismail Vadi, Gauteng Transport MEC

We are not shutting down the routes for convenience, it is around public safety. Innocent commuters have been killed, people have lost their lives as recently as Monday and Sunday this week.

The affected ranks and routes will be closed from Thursday.

These include Mofolo Informal Rank, Makhetha Stores Rank,Dube Station Rank, Uncle Tom's Taxi Rank and Phefeni.
