United States (US) President Donald Trump has defended his eldest son after Donald Trump Jr released emails that showed him welcoming Russian help against his father's rival in the 2016 presidential election.
My son Donald did a good job last night. He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 12, 2017
President Trump praised the transparency shown by Donald Jr in what has been described as an attempt by the Russian government to undermine Hillary Clinton's presidential election campaign.
The emails offered the most concrete evidence to date that Trump campaign officials embraced Russian help to win the election.

Trump's defence of his son comes despite the fact that the emails increase the pressure on the White House over investigations into potential ties between Trump's team and Russia.
International relations expert Professor John Stremlau says the emails mark a significant development and are the "smoking gun" which illustrates the Russian influence in the US political system.
It does link the family to the question of whether or not there was possible collusion.. We may have reached a tipping point.— Prof John Stremlau, Professor of International Relations at Wits University
There is no question that this is a public relations disaster for the Trump administration... It's going to hurt them.— Prof John Stremlau, Professor of International Relations at Wits University
This is in effect. a smoking gun.— Prof John Stremlau, Professor of International Relations at Wits University
The release of the emails appear to have been forced by the fact that reporters were preparing an expose story.
Stremlau says impeachment talks may be on the card for the US President.
