7 candidates in Presidential succession race, SACP preps for ANC split: analysis

Political analyst, Karima Brown said while the ANC is "shaping up" in the Presidential succession race, there are fundamental talks about whether the party is still in fact the vehicle to contest elections.

The SACP, Brown said, is in discussions around a united front involving organisations beyond the ANC, and is preparing for an ANC that splits and is not won by any of these 7 candidates.

Brown said if it's not won by treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize or Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and is retained by the Zuma faction, the possibilities of that need to be explored.

Everything is hinging on this race shapes up. In January/February, South African's will see interesting developments depending on what happens in December...

Women who have thrown their hat into the ring include Baleka Mbete, Lindiwe Sisulu and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The others include Ramaphosa, Mkhize, secretary-general Gwede Mantashe and Paul Mashatile.
