67 free life changing operations for cataracts and hips #MandelaDay

As part of the Mandela Day initiative, doctors and nurses have been giving their time and expertise to perform 67 additional operations (27 hip and 40 cataract) in 8 government hospitals in the province.

Head of Department at Western Cape Department of Health, Dr Beth Engelbrecht, says the final cataract operation will be done on Saturday at Eerste River hospital and the hip will be completed on Friday.

It's under 15 minutes operations that changes the lives of the people.

According to Engelbrecht, the budget for all operations was R1.5 million which all came from donations. The Ackermans foundation paid for all the cataract operation to the tune of R90 000.

We are extremely happy with the response from the public at large as well as our colleagues in the private sector.

All the operations were done in time to allow all the recipients to celebrate Mandela Day together on 18 July.

After hearing what the W Cape health department was doing, the Mitchell's Plain District Hospital also jumped on the wagon and rallied their team together to perform a 67 female sterilization marathon to be held on Sunday 16 July.

Dr Daniela Krick, head of department at Mitchell's Plain hospital says they have 40 women booked for Sunday and two theaters where they'll be performing these procedures.
