A 'mental health day' is a real thing

What happens when you need time off work to recuperate from the everyday stresses of the workplace?

Peter Strasheim, managing consultant at DLM Labour give three ways in which employers can get some time off to regain strength.

  • If it's a medical diagnosis you can ask your doctor to give a medical certificate that can be forwarded to your boss.

  • You can use the Equality and Equity Act and ask to be reasonably accommodated.

  • You can ask HR for flexible working arrangements, maybe to work from home for a while or leave work early.

This conversation stems out of a letter that made rounds on social media of an American woman who sent a note to her team that she was taking a day off to focus on her mental health.

See letter below:

But what happens when an employee is affected by the death of a loved one to a point where it impacts on their mental state?

According to Strasheim, under the Equality and Equity Act, an employee can ask for disability related benefits.

It can be lump sum benefit or income benefit. Lump sum pays a multiple of ones' salary and income benefit pays about 75% of your income. This is an insured benefit through the pension fund.

When you claim that you are a person with disability under the Equality and Equity Act then you have an automated card to be reasonably accommodated in the workplace.
