[LISTEN] Thabo Mbeki and SA's short memory

Former President Thabo Mbeki was at the centre of an open line debate on 702, following his interview on Power FM on Thursday night.

Responding to popular support for the former president, Eusebius Mckaiser criticised what he says is a sense of nostalgia from the public. He believes President Jacob Zuma is being used as a yardstick for leadership excellence.

I think his best years in the state were from '94 to '99 but after that, it is at best a checkered political legacy, his policies on Zim were insane, based on big men 'bromance' with Mugabe.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702/CapeTalk anchor

There are 330 000 preventable deaths that he has never been morally owned up to, says McKaiser

There was never an equitable distribution of the economic pie he was growing, and inside the ANC he was already role modeling factionalism himself....I think the reason why some of you are sucking up to him is because Jacob Zuma is so useless that you use Jacob Zuma as your yardstick for leadership excellence.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702/CapeTalk anchor

Some of McKaiser's callers disagree.

The Mbeki leadership has always represented debate on policy, how we should govern South Africa. We are now always debating about saga after saga, personal wealth, families taking over government. Who is working, and when are they working? When Mbeki was here, we can always appreciate that we only fought with him about work. If you dislike Mbeki you will only dislike him because of a policy stance...
